Our adventure in Koh Yao Noi

After our first day around Phuket mainly by going on tours, we decided that it was time to figure out a way of visiting an island on our own. We didn’t want to deal with being on a schedule and not having the freedom to do what we wanted, which is what we love to do most.

We were recommended to visit Koh Yao Noi. All we had to do was catch a ferry and then we were free to explore.  It was so easy!

About Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are a pair of large islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay. They are a 30 minute boat ride from Phuket. Koh Yao Noi in particular remains a quiet refuge that feels far removed from the crowds of Phuket.

It has wooden houses all along the roads, buffalos eating in the rice paddies, many rubber plantations and the beauty of the mangrove with its trees standing in the middle of the sea.

The ferry tickets for 4 people were 800 baht, which is about $23. Once you get there you will find plenty of taxis that will drive you wherever you want. You should definitely bargain on the price!

We met a friendly lady on the ferry who gave us a little bit of direction on where to go to spend the day. She suggested Pa Sai beach.

While we were walking around, we saw an awesome motorbike that would fit the whole family. We figured that it would be a great way of seeing more of island. We rented it for 3 hours, for only 200 bath about $6. It was so much fun, we could go around and be all together!

We drove up the coast and saw many beautiful spots. We stopped for a snack and also tried to swim at a beach but the low tide made the water be so far away!

Eventually we did find a beach, but it was empty! We noticed that here there are many fancy resorts, some are also on the beach. We had the feeling that people tend to stay more in the resort then explore outside, so we had the beach all to ourselves!

North of the Island there is a private property that you can reach only by boat, but only if you staying at the resort. It must be a beautiful area, unfortunately we didn’t get to see it.

The beaches here are perfect for relaxing. They offer shaded areas thanks to the huge trees, hammocks, large swings and chairs, so you really enjoy your time.

There are also a few restaurants and shops on the street. I went in two of them. In one the lady gave me some honest prices for the clothing she was selling, in the second one she gave me all prices doubled. Probably thinking that I was I was just going to go ahead and buy, well guess where I went shopping? I have been in Thailand over a week now, have shopped around a little and know what clothing sells for, so I didn’t even try to argue with her I just left.

This trip to Thailand has been a bit different because we didn’t get to be all together all the time. However on these days when we did get to do a little adventure all together, we were grateful for making the choice of joining Mass on this trip.

Once we got back to the hotel that night, after a memorable day on Koh Yao Noi, a new idea sparked in our minds. Why not sell everything and explore the world?
